Master the strategies and structure behind a focused, credible, and impactful literature review.
This workshop will provide participants with the foundational knowledge and skills necessary to conduct appropriate literature reviews for their engineering education scholarship and/or research.

Start Smart: Crafting a Compelling Literature Review will provide participants with the foundational skills necessary to conduct appropriate literature reviews for their engineering education scholarship and/or research.
During this workshop, participants will explore their motivation for conducting a literature review and then identify the appropriate type of literature review to address their needs. The workshop will guide participants in how to conduct literature reviews by providing concrete steps to follow and encourage them to make connections between the outcomes of their literature review and their engineering education scholarship and/or research. By the end of this workshop, participants will have the knowledge and skills necessary to position their engineering education scholarship and/or research based upon a thorough literature review of their field of study.
This workshop is tailored to those who aim to better understand their specified field of study through completion of a literature review.
This workshop is delivered in one four-hour session. Participants will engage with facilitators and peers through interactive breakout activities and guided discussions.
How You Will Benefit
• You will learn what motivates individuals to conduct literature reviews and how this relates to the selection of a literature review approach.
• You will learn the process to follow when conducting a literature review to ensure that you are accurately capturing the appropriate literature and creating a solid foundation for your engineering education scholarship and/or research.
• You will receive feedback on your literature review approach and suggestions for how to strengthen your work.
• You will receive resources to help assist you with future literature review searches.
Learning Outcomes
Graduates of Start Smart: Crafting a Compelling Literature Review will be able to:
- Select the appropriate literature review approach for your intended purpose.
- Create search strings that will enable location of literature focused on your field of interest.
- Review identified articles for determination of suitability with intended literature review goals.
- Formulate a literature review that synthesizes selected articles.
Facilitator
Cheryl Bodnar, PhD is a Professor and the Associate Chair for Graduate Studies and Research Infrastructure in the Engineering Education Department at The Ohio State University. Her research interests relate to the incorporation of game-based learning and entrepreneurial mindset into engineering education. In particular, she is interested in the impact these elements can have on student perception of the classroom environment, motivation, and student learning outcomes. Currently, her research is funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Kern Family Foundation. Her work has been published across multiple venues within engineering education and chemical engineering education including the Journal of Engineering Education, Studies in Engineering Education, and Chemical Engineering Education. She also serves on the Kern Entrepreneurial Engineering Network (KEEN) Leadership Council. Cheryl earned her B.S. in Chemical Engineering from The University of Calgary, and her Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering with a specialization in Biomedical Engineering from The University of Calgary.
